What Type of Device This Is

Magic Leap 2 is a true waveguide AR headset - holographic overlays on the real world, not video passthrough. Like HoloLens 2, it uses optical waveguides to project light into the eye. The distinction from video see-through headsets (Varjo XR-4, Quest 3 passthrough) is fundamental: waveguide AR provides transparency, precise real-world alignment, and no latency from a camera feed. Display and FoV Improvement

Magic Leap 2's ~70° × 55° FoV is a significant improvement over HoloLens 2's ~43° diagonal. In practice, holograms feel more natural and less like looking through a window. Enterprise Applications

Magic Leap has refocused entirely on enterprise. The application ecosystem covers manufacturing, surgery, field service, and defense. PTC Vuforia, Scope AR, and Salesforce integrations are available off-the-shelf. The LuminOS (Android-based) platform enables enterprise MDM via standard Android Enterprise tools. For IT administrators, Magic Leap 2 is more manageable than proprietary platforms.

Compute Unit Design

The processing unit is separate from the headset, worn on the body or kept in a bag. This keeps the headset weight at 248g - substantially lighter than self-contained alternatives. The trade-off is the tether cable between headset and compute unit. For most industrial use cases, this is acceptable; for mobile field work where hands-free operation is critical, cable management requires planning.
