Question 1

What skills do you need for a career in XR?

Accepted Answer

Core XR career skills vary by role. For developers: Unity or Unreal Engine, C# or C++, 3D math, and platform-specific SDKs (Meta SDK, ARKit, OpenXR). For designers: spatial UX design, 3D modeling (Blender, Maya), interaction design for 3D environments. For product managers: XR hardware knowledge, enterprise software background, and understanding of spatial computing use cases. Across all roles, familiarity with at least one major headset platform is essential.

Question 2

What is the average salary for a VR developer?

Accepted Answer

VR and XR developer salaries vary widely by location and experience. In the US, mid-level XR software engineers at companies like Meta, Apple, and Google typically earn $141,000–$255,000 including equity. Senior XR engineers and leads at major tech companies earn $174,000–$350,000+. Junior/entry-level XR developers at smaller studios or agencies may earn $70,000–$110,000. Salaries are highest in San Francisco, Seattle, and New York.

Question 3

Are XR jobs remote-friendly?

Accepted Answer

XR job availability for remote work is mixed. Enterprise XR training and development roles at agencies tend to offer more remote flexibility. However, hardware-adjacent roles (display engineering, optics, firmware at Meta, Apple, Google) typically require on-site presence in their offices. Product management and business development XR roles often offer hybrid arrangements. Roles at pure software XR companies are more likely to be remote or hybrid.

Question 4

What companies are hiring for XR roles?

Accepted Answer

The largest XR employers in 2025 include Meta (Reality Labs), Apple (Vision Products Group), Google (Android XR / Glasses), Samsung Research America, Snap (Spectacles AR), Microsoft (Mixed Reality), Niantic, and Magic Leap. Beyond Big Tech, XR development agencies, enterprise training companies, healthcare simulation firms, and defense contractors are active XR hirers.
