Meta launched Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 at Connect 2026, and it went on sale on September 23, 2026 from $449. Unlike past launches, the previous model did not disappear: Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 stays on sale at $379. That leaves buyers choosing between two current generations that look similar, share a camera and run the same Meta AI app.
The differences are real but narrow: battery, microphones, a new button, weight and, above all, frame styles. This guide lays them out side by side and ends with a clear answer on which to buy.

Price
Gen 2 costs $379 and Gen 3 starts at $449, a $70 gap. Lens choices such as prescription, Transitions and polarized lenses raise the price of both. Meta's Gen 2 product page now points shoppers to Gen 3 "for newer styles and tech", but Gen 2 remains a full current product, not a clearance item.

Styles and Fit
This is the biggest practical difference, because the two generations mostly come in different frames. Gen 2 offers Wayfarer, Skyler and Headliner. Gen 3 offers Wayfarer, the first Ray-Ban Meta Aviator, and Zena, a cat-eye frame, across 27 color and lens combinations at launch. Wayfarer is the only shape sold in both.
Meta says Gen 3 is slimmer and adds professional-adjustable temple tips for a better fit. Engadget measures the Gen 3 Wayfarer at 129mm hinge to hinge with 149mm temples, versus 131mm and 150mm for Gen 2. Engadget's reviewer found the Aviator frames noticeably thicker than earlier models. Despite the slimmer frame, Gen 3 is a touch heavier: 51.5g against 51g for the Wayfarer, per Engadget. Half a gram will not be noticeable for most people, so comfort comes down to frame shape and fit.

Meta rates Gen 3 at up to 9 hours of moderate use and Gen 2 at up to 8, with the case adding up to 50 and 48 more hours respectively. Gen 2 charges to 50% in 20 minutes. These are Meta's mixed-use ratings; continuous music or video capture drains either pair faster.

Microphones, Calls and Controls
Gen 3's six-microphone array is the upgrade most people will notice day to day. Meta says it cuts more than 90% of background noise, and Engadget notes the redesigned layout is aimed at calls and AI interactions in noisy places. Gen 3 also replaces Gen 2's camera-only capture button with a customizable action button that can summon Meta AI, capture, or run a shortcut.

Camera and Privacy
The camera hardware is unchanged: both have a 12MP camera and record 3K Ultra HD video. Gen 3 adds dynamic photo capture and, later in 2026, Dolby Atmos spatial audio recording, which Meta says will make its glasses the first consumer devices to capture video in Dolby Atmos. Engadget reports that dynamic photos are also coming to Gen 2.
On privacy, nothing fundamental changes. Both have a camera on the frame and an LED indicator that lights when you capture. If a camera on your face is the problem, the camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio at $349 is the alternative.
