Quick Answer

Meta unveiled a cheaper $299 in-house smart glasses line while Apple's Vision Pro and smart glasses lead Paul Meade departed for OpenAI's hardware unit. The VR Games Showcase delivered dozens of new reveals, and Meta AI began rolling out to Quest headsets across the week.

Summarize with AI

This week in XR was defined by two headlines that pulled the industry in opposite directions. Meta pushed further into consumer smart glasses with a new in-house $299 line, then closed the week losing ground on the perception front when Apple's Vision Pro and smart glasses chief left for OpenAI. In between, the Summer 2026 VR Games Showcase delivered a full slate of Quest and PC VR announcements, and Meta AI began its gradual rollout across the Quest lineup. Smart glasses momentum, not headset momentum, continues to set the tone for 2026.

Hardware

Meta debuts $299 Meta Glasses, its first in-house smart glasses design. At a New York press event on June 22 and launch on June 23, Meta introduced a new smart glasses line branded simply "Meta Glasses" that starts at $299, undercutting the Ray-Ban Meta lineup. Meta on Tuesday said it's launching a new line of smart glasses, dubbed Meta Glasses, starting at $299. These glasses are being made in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, but unlike the tech giant's other smart glasses, they don't carry Ray-Ban or Oakley branding. The company claims its new Muse Spark AI model improves how the glasses can extract details from photos and remember personal preferences. Meta Glasses will launch with Muse Spark, while the company's previous glasses will get the new model through a software update. TechCrunch

Snap Specs preorders continue as NPR profiles the $2,195 launch. Following the AWE debut, NPR published a wider look at the Specs launch on June 19, framing Snap's bet as a post-smartphone play. The company this week officially launched new augmented reality glasses called Specs, which project digital information directly into a user's field of vision. The glasses can display maps, notifications, games and AI-powered assistance. NPR

Software & Apps

Funding & Deals

Apple's Vision Pro and smart glasses chief Paul Meade leaves for OpenAI. In one of the biggest personnel moves of the year for XR, Bloomberg reported June 26 that Meade will exit within a week to join OpenAI's hardware team. Apple Inc.'s top executive in charge of the Vision Pro headset and the company's smart glasses efforts is leaving for OpenAI, continuing a streak of high-profile defections to rivals in the artificial intelligence and hardware sectors. Paul Meade, a vice president, is set to leave Apple by next week and will then start at OpenAI's hardware unit, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Bloomberg

A traditional funding round week was otherwise quiet in the June 19-26 window, with most XR deal announcements clustering around AWE the prior week.

Enterprise & Industry

Counterpoint pegs Meta at 84 percent of Q1 2026 smart glasses share as enterprises watch. Data released by Counterpoint Research in June underscored just how concentrated the smart glasses market has become around Meta and EssilorLuxottica ahead of the new $299 launch. According to Counterpoint Research data from June 2026, Meta holds an 84% share of the global smart glasses market as of Q1 2026. To put that in perspective, every other company on the planet, from scrappy Chinese startups to established tech giants, is fighting over the remaining 16%. Crypto Briefing

Creator Spotlight

Triangle Factory used the June 23 showcase to reveal Breachers: Outbreak, a new co-op branch of its popular tactical shooter franchise. Set in the universe of Breachers, Breachers: Outbreak is a 4-player co-op zombie extraction shooter where you and your friends are dropped into infected quarantine zones to recover the key to preventing an undead apocalypse. The Belgian studio has been one of the more consistent multiplayer developers on Quest, and its pivot from PvP-style raids into a PvE extraction structure is notable because it tracks the broader flatscreen shooter trend into VR without abandoning the tactile gunplay that made the original Breachers work. XR Pulse

Smart glasses data continues to dominate the market picture. Meta continues to dominate with 69.2% market share in Q1 2026, a commanding lead built on the strength of its Ray-Ban partnership with EssilorLuxottica, the world's largest eyewear maker, and a marketing machine that few hardware companies can replicate. The research firm found that smart glasses without displays surged 167% year-on-year (YoY) in Q1 2026, reaching approximately 2.25 million units in a single quarter. Putting that into perspective, IDC noted that the entire category shipped roughly the same number - 2.7 million units - in all of 2024 than it did in the first three months of this year. Counterpoint's tracker for the same quarter puts Meta closer to 84 percent, a gap that partly reflects category definitions. That's at least $80 less than the price tag for the company's entry-level second-generation Meta Ray-Ban glasses. Meta is aggressively marketing its smart glasses to consumers as it seeks to own a hardware platform in the AI era.

XR Fact of the Week

Smart glasses without displays surged 167% year-on-year in Q1 2026, reaching approximately 2.25 million units in a single quarter. The entire category shipped roughly the same number - 2.7 million units - in all of 2024 than it did in the first three months of this year, per IDC data referenced in Computer Weekly's June 16 coverage - context that puts Meta's June 23 launch of a lower-priced $299 line squarely inside the fastest-growing consumer hardware category of the year.
